Club History
Woodford-cum-Membris Bowls Club is set in the rural Northamptonshire village of Woodford Halse, built on land gifted to the Parish and now part of the sports complex known as The Sarafield, which is also home to Woodford United Football Club and Woodford Halse Cricket Club.
With funding from the village's Sport and Recreation Association, support from a handful of local businesses and some generous member donations, the club was officially opened by Chairman of the Northamptonshire Women’s Bowling Association, Sheila Drage, on 4th June 1994.
For several years, home was a portakabin donated by a local company. But when member numbers started to increase it became clear that a larger, more permanent clubhouse was needed. And so the club set about raising funds to purchase the necessary materials.
Despite their number (and in some cases age and fitness), a resolute group of members started building. Overcoming a number of challenges including the weather, their sheer determination and hard work resulted in the fine clubhouse we have today.
This year has been particularly eventful, with a crack team of greenkeepers and turfcare specialists kindly volunteering to resurrect our green and a busy team of members and local tradesman using materials donated by a number of businesses to improve the club's facilities.
Under the guidance of the current Chairman and Captain, a proactive committee and a team of hardworking volunteer supporters, the club is thriving with a membership which increases year on year - a tribute to those, both past and present, who have supported the club.
Over the years the name of Woodford-cum-Membris Bowls Club has become synonymous with other clubs in the County and beyond, with a cheerful welcome, a sporting green, a fantastic tea, a good standard of play and, we hope, a sound beating.
Long may it continue.
