Club History

Founded by a small group of keen bowlers in the Northamptonshire village of Woodford Halse in 1994, Woodford-cum-Membris is a club which has been built almost entirely on the enthusiasm and determination of its members.

With funding from the village's SARA committee, support from a handful of local businesses and some generous member donations, the Club was officially opened by Chairman of the Northamptonshire Womens Bowling Association, Sheila Drage, on 4th June 1994.

For several years, home was a portakabin donated by a local engineering firm. But when member numbers started to increase it became clear that a larger, more permanent clubhouse was needed. And so the Club set about raising funds to purchase the necessary materials.

Despite their number (and in some cases their age and fitness), a dedicated group of members started building. Overcoming a number of challenges including some adverse weather, their sheer determination and hard work resulted in the fine clubhouse we have today.

Under the guidance of our current Chairman and Captain, Colin Brock, a proactive committee and a team of hardworking volunteers, the club is thriving with a membership which increases year on year - a real tribute to those, both past and present, who supported the Club.

A full range of mens, ladies and mixed competitions are played between members as well as the usual roll-ups and we play around 30 competitive games each season including County competitions. We also have a fledgling junior membership.

Almost fifteen years on and Woodford's name has become synonymous amongst other clubs in the County and beyond, with a cheerful welcome, a sporting green, a fantastic tea, a good standard of play and, we hope, a sound beating.

Long may it continue.
