Derek Headley

Following a massive stroke on Boxing Day, Derek passed away peacefully with the ever-present Gina by his side. The service in Milton Malsor was attended by friends and family and a good number of members who all shared their memories. Always the life and soul and never without a story to tell or an opinion to share, Derek was a popular member of the club for many years. He served as President in  2005 and was always keen to encourage younger members of the community to have a go at bowls - including myself. Despite his ailing health during the past two years, he never lost his spirit and lust for life. Our love and thoughts are with Gina and his family at this very sad time.

Nationwide Bowler

The comings and goings at Woodford over the past 12 months have been followed closely by the local press as well as several bowls and turfcare magazines. The latest to cover our story is Nationwide Bowler. John Cook

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of John Cook, who died peacefully in his sleep on 22nd April. John had been unwell for some time but despite his failing health, he continued to be an active member of the club and was looking forward to playing this season. John was a founding member of the club and was also treasurer for a short time. He was also one of the driving forces behind the building of the clubhouse. He will be greatly missed by everyone at the club. The club is to plant a Rowan Sorbus (Mountain Ash) tree at the front of the club in John's memory. There will be a short memorial at 11am on Sunday 25th September which will be attended by his wife Rita and his children Nigel and Anita. All club members are invited to attend and pay their respects.

Solden Hill House

Residents if Solden Hill House will be joining us every Monday afternoon for the remainder of the season to enjoy an hour or so of bowls as part of their recreational activity. They have all played before and some have their own bowls. It is a hugely rewarding hour (as well as a lot of fun). If anyone would like to help out please let Tom Rigby know.

Brick by brick...

Despite the arrival of the wind, rain and frost, work at the club continues apace.

Thanks to the generosity of Aggregate Industries, Jewson and Nigel McKie Paving, by the New Year the entire perimeter path will be paved. As well as looking very smart it will enable the club to welcome members and visitors who use a wheelchair or are perhaps a bit unsteady on their feet.

Paul and Tom will be busy in the clubhouse fitting new kitchen units, a new noticeboard and some framed honours boards listing every competition winners and runner-up since the club first opened. We've also received generous donations from Carpetright (new kitchen flooring) and Comet (kitchen appliances).

After its thorough end-of-season renovations, the green is looking very good. Paul and Tom saw off a bout of fusarium which the mild climate and damp conditions had brought with it and Dean Broughton continues to visit on a monthly basis to aerate the green.

Up, up and away...

On captain’s day we released 500 balloons, raising just under £350 for the club. Our thanks go to local firm Woodford Tool & Plant Hire which generously donated £150 towards the cost of the helium and balloons.

The winner of the balloon race was ticket number 399 which belonged to

D. Mumford of Culworth. His ticket landed in Korbeek Lo in Belgium - an incredible 300 miles away! And Mr Mumford kindly donated his winnings back to the club.

Ladies Gala

The clubhouse was beautifully decorated, the food was superb, the gardens looked a picture, the green played well and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. What a fantastic day, enjoyed not only by those who played but also by the 20 or so from Woodford and Byfield who came to support. Congratulations to all involved. I won’t mention the final score, safe to say that we’ll be fighting to get the trophy back next year.
